What is Accessibility ?

Accessibility refers to the ease with which everybody can approach, enter and use buildings, outdoor areas and other facilities, independently, without the need for any special arrangements. How to Improve Accessibility ?

Several factors influence accessibility. The most common barriers faced by disabled people are physical inaccessibility of the premises, staff’s lack of understanding of the needs of disabled clients or colleagues, inappropriate staff attitude, and/ or non-disabled friendly organizational policies and procedures. It is therefore essential to involve a professional ‘Access Consultant’ if a fully inclusive environment is to be achieved. An Access Consultant will be able to consider all barriers, besides physical/ structural barriers, that can limit or promote the accessibility and recommend additional solutions such as provision of assistive devices, staff training, and suggesting appropriate changes in policies, practices and procedures.     More Details

What is an Access Audit ?

An access audit is regarded as the first step towards improving accessibility. An Access audit is an important tool to identify barriers, within a building but also external areas such as play spaces, car parking etc. The audit provides a "base-line" assessment against which initial recommendations can be made. With the results of the access report, service providers are better equipped to bring key personnel and management to specific meetings to discuss what they are able to achieve within short and long-term time frames.          More Details

How much does it Cost ?

Improving accessibility does not necessarily incur high costs. Incorporating Access features right in the planning phase costs only an additional 2 % of the entire project cost. However, costs involved in retrofitting accessibility in an already built environment are three times higher. Therefore, it helps to consider accessibility right at the drawing board stage.          More Details
