Overview of Disability

What is Disabilty ?

A disability is a functional limitation or restriction of an individual's ability to perform an activity. A disability becomes a "handicap" because of environmental or attitudinal barriers that limit the opportunity for a person to participate fully. Negative attitudes or inaccessible entrances to buildings are examples of handicaps.

“Disability is a socially created problem and not an attribute of an individual”.

Indian Statistics

The most recent Census of India (2001) conducted by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) points to a disability percentage of 2.13% putting the number of PWDs at 2.19 crore. However, these figures are extremely conservative and the office of Chief Commmissioner for persons with Disabilities (CCD) estimates that about 5% of the Indian population is disabled.           More Details
