Dear all,
Today I would like to share some great experience I had in the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2008 held at Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi from 21/11/2008
to 23/11/2008.
I was selected as an Assistant Trainer for one of the wonderful business workshops, "The Dialogue in the Dark International"
DIALOGUE IN THE DARK - An exhibition to discover the unseen
Dialogue in the Dark is an awareness-raising social franchising company, offering exhibitions and business-training in total darkness, creating jobs for
the blind, disabled and disadvantaged worldwide. Its exhibition uses blind guides to lead visitors in small groups through different settings in total
darkness where they learn how to interact without sight by using their other senses, and offers the public an experience that can change mindsets on disability
and diversity, and increase tolerance. Over six million visitors from more than 25 countries have experienced the exhibition, giving over 5.000 blind people
jobs since its first opening in 1988.
Idea & Concept
The idea is simple: In completely darkened rooms blind people lead small groups of guests through an exhibition in which everyday situations are experienced
altogether differently, without eyesight.
A role reversal takes place: sighted people are torn out of social routines and familiar acceptance. Blind people provide a sense of orientation and mobility
and become ambassadors of a culture devoid of images. They prove that being blind is a different, interesting way to perceive and lead life and has nothing
to do with thoughts of suicide and despair. Everybody shares an unforgettable experience. They feel their own limits, perceptions and gratitude for their
eyesight; they come to understand the importance of empathy, communication and solidarity and develop respect for people who see the world through different
eyes.
To complement the exhibitions we offer educational activities for pupils, teachers and anybody else who is interested. A special gastronomic experience
can be found in our Taste of Darkness. For companies and institutions we offer special Business Workshops worldwide.
Business Workshops, Content
Spending time in dark rooms and meeting blind people bring about a change of perspective, which can also be transferred to the context of work. For this
reason we developed leadership trainings and teambuilding seminars. Participants experience themselves and others in complete darkness. They solve tasks
together and are assisted by blind trainers. Workshops take place worldwide, either within the framework of existing exhibitions or in the context of corporate
functions.
Workshops
The progression of exercises in complete darkness creates absolutely unpredictable situations. The unknown, challenging environment provokes, confuses and
sensitizes in equal measure.
Since it is not possible to use one’s visual senses, one has to activate entirely new resources and unused potentials to reach the set goal. This inspiring
experience brings about dramatic insights for professional leaders in their everyday routines.
