BANGALORE:
About eight to 14 per cent of the number of school-going children in the country suffer from dyslexia or learning disorders, according to a NCERT survey. To address issues related to this common but often misunderstood condition and discuss possible remedies, the Malleswaram Dyslexia Association conducted an interactive programme here on Sunday.
Psychotherapists, special educators, parents and teachers came together to exchange views, share experiences and also seek help for their children affected by dyslexia.
“Students with learning disorders are able to score good marks at the primary level by simply memorising but as the syllabus gets heavier their learning disabilities surface,” said Aparna Kalyanpur, a special educator.
Further, children are prodded by their parents for being “too lazy” or “always watching TV and not paying attention to studies”, when, in reality, they are suffering from a condition that makes them find academics too confusing and tedious.
Parents and teachers must look out for signs of learning disorders, she said.
K.S. Gopalan, president of the association, said that schools played an important role in identifying and helping children with learning disabilities. “However, very few teachers are aware of these disorders. A lot has to be done in this aspect,” he said.
Acceptance
After a child has been diagnosed with the disorder, Ms. Kalyanpur said, it is important that the parents learn to accept the child along with his learning disabilities. “Parents do not always accept their children’s learning disabilities and instead put more pressure on them. This can only destroy the child’s self-esteem. Parents need to be supportive and let the children grow naturally,” she said
Prof. Gopalan said: “The concessions provided by the Government have been helpful to students with specific learning disorders. Dyslexic students can now skip mathematics and science in SSLC, and spelling mistakes are now overlooked in their case. They are also given 30 minutes extra time in examinations to help them in completing their papers.”
