Bangalore:
To foster greater understanding about cord blood stem cell storage and its potential applications for various life-threatening diseases, Cryo-Save, a stem cell bank, will observe September as Cord Blood Stem Cell Awareness month.
Bangalore Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology president N. Venkatesh told presspersons here on Tuesday that the month was to propagate the emerging concept of umbilical cord blood banking.
“Although it is a little expensive, cord blood cells have the potential of saving the person's life in future if he or she suffers from life-threatening diseases,” Dr. Venkatesh said.
Initiative
“This awareness month is a public education initiative linking researchers, doctors, patients and common public around the country. It provides a platform to appreciate the scientific and clinical developments on stem cells, unfolding the speculation and myths around the concept and therefore encourage more people to store cord blood stem cells,” he said.
Pointing out that general awareness about the concept of cord blood stem cells and its clinical applications was low in India, Dr. Venkatesh said: “Such awareness initiatives can help expectant mothers to decide wisely.”
Cord blood stem cells had generated unprecedented excitement in medical research, creating remarkable breakthroughs. Cord blood stem cells had the potential to treat many devastating, degenerative and induced diseases of the heart, lung, brain, kidney and nervous system (including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease), autoimmune diseases (such as multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis) and immunodeficiency ailments, he added.
