Refrigerator Mothers is a documentary released in 2003 by Kartemquin Films for PBS's P.O.V. series. The film paints an intimate portrait of an entire generation of American mothers whose children were diagnosed with autism. Labeled 'refrigerator mothers' in the 1950s and 1960s by the medical establishment for their supposedly frigid and detached mothering, these women "have emerged with strong, resilient voices to share the details of their personal journeys."

Le secret de Jérôme (1994)
ad feedbackIn 1863, when a legless, shipwrecked man washes up on the Acadian coast, he's taken to the home of Jean the Corsican, a burly and bitter former soldier, and his childless young wife, Julitte. The man, who is young, handsome, and well-dressed, remains mute as Julitte nurses him back to health. Jean, meanwhile, who is inexplicably estranged from Julitte and an outsider to townspeople, continues his hunt for pirate treasure, rumored to be hidden in a cave by the sea. The treasure is his ticket out of Acadia. As loneliness and Eros draw Julitte and the mysterious Jérôme together, something's got to give

Dance Me to My Song is not a documentary, but I learned as much about the plight of a certain segment of the disabled community from this motion picture as I have from any non-fiction film. The star of the movie, Heather Rose (who also co-wrote the script and was instrumental in bringing the project to the screen), is afflicted with a severe case of cerebral palsy. She has only rudimentary control over her body, is confined to a wheelchair, and needs a computer voice to speak for her. But her mind is quick and active, and her courage, which is evident in every aspect of this astounding performance, is sufficient to inspire anyone.
Rose is quick to point out that the experiences endured by her character, Julia, are not strictly autobiographical, although it's obvious that she understands the situation far better than any other actor could. In Julia, Rose creates someone we can empathize with and care about without pitying. We appreciate her pluck and bravery, and how she never allows any circumstance, no matter how difficult, to deter her. Regardless of the odds or the predicament, Julia never gives up. How many of us could say the same thing? In a very real sense, her efforts are superhuman. Julia does not strive to be "normal"; she realizes that's an impossibility - no matter how independent she becomes, she will always require the assistance of a companion/caregiver. Her goal is to be accorded the respect deserved by every human being, regardless of their limitations.

My Sister's Keeper is a 2009 American drama film directed by Nick Cassavetes and starring Cameron Diaz, Abigail Breslin, Sofia Vassilieva, and Alec Baldwin. Based on Jodi Picoult's novel of the same name [1] My Sister's Keeper was released in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom on June 26, 2009.
Conceived by means of in vitro fertilization, Anna Fitzgerald (Abigail Breslin) was brought into the world to be a genetic match for her older sister, Kate (Sofia Vassilieva), who suffers from acute promyelocytic leukemia, in order to keep her alive. Her family members are introduced one by one and each tell about how Kate's illness has affected them personally and the family. When Kate turns 15, she goes into renal failure. Anna knows that she will be forced by her parents to donate a kidney. She also realizes that she may not be able to live the life she leads - she may be unable to cheer-lead, play soccer, or be a mother.

At First Sight is a 1999 American film starring Val Kilmer and Mira Sorvino, based on the essay To See and Not to See in neurologist Oliver Sacks' book An Anthropologist on Mars and inspired by the true life story of Shirl Jennings.
Amy Benic (Mira Sorvino) takes a break from working as an architect at a spa in Pinecrest, a small town outside New York. Virgil Adamson (Val Kilmer) is a masseur at the spa and gives Amy a massage. Amy breaks down and cries, later falling asleep as Virgil leaves the room. When she wakes up, she runs after him to compliment the massage, only to realize that Virgil is blind. Virgil asks her out.
Virgil lives alone, though his over-protective sister, Jennie (Kelly McGillis), who lives next door, takes care of him. During an intimate session with Amy, Virgil reveals that he went blind when he was three and that the last thing he saw was something fluffy. Amy describes the horizon to Virgil as something that you "can see but can never reach".
While researching Virgil's condition, Amy learns of Doctor Charles Aaron, a specialist in eye treatment who suggests to Virgil that, with surgery, he could restore his sight. Virgil refuses. To understand Virgil's reaction Amy seeks out Jennie, who reveals that their father left the family years ago after putting Virgil through several kinds of treatment to restore his sight

Peaceful Warrior is a 2006 drama film starring Scott Mechlowicz, Nick Nolte, and Amy Smart. Released on June 2, 2006, it is based on the novel Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman.
The film takes place at U.C. Berkeley, and features a troubled but talented gymnast who meets a spiritual guide.
At the beginning of the plot, Dan Millman (Scott Mechlowicz) is a university student as well as a locally famous gymnast who dreams of winning a National Championship competition. He sexually couples with numerous young women who are impressed by his agility and skill, but suffers from psychological restlessness. On one occasion, Dan attempts to compensate for the restlessness by running along streets before sunrise. At a car-service station, he encounters an old man (Nick Nolte) who seems to know more about Dan's problem than Dan himself knows, whom Dan later nicknames "Socrates." Dan is unsettled by Socrates' knowledge; by the fact that Socrates had appeared in a nightmare as a faceless janitor, clad in mismatched shoes (by which he is identified in waking life), who sweeps up the pieces of Dan's shattered leg; and by the old man's extraordinary speed, agility, and co-ordination. As a result of his exposure to the last, Dan seeks to learn the secret behind it.
One day, Dan drives recklessly, and his motorcycle collides with a car that ran a red light, causing his right femur bone to shatter. He is rushed to a hospital, where a metal bar is placed in his leg to maintain its integrity. As a result, his gymnastic coach (Tim DeKay) stops believing that Dan can compete in the National competition. Dan, hurt by this lack of faith, recovers from the injury and resumes his training under Socrates' tutelage. Eventually, he is restored to full health and strength, while his co-ordination improves and his mind is set entirely on the present moment. He competes in the U.S. Trials for the Olympics and achieves a victory

David's Mother originally aired on the CBS Network April 10, 1994.
David's Mother is portrayed by Kirstie Alley as Sally Goodson. The best actor in this movie is Michael Goorjian in the role of David Goodson. Stockard Channing is known as Bea, sister to Sally. It was never mentioned who was the eldest of the girls, but Bea took on a concerned role for her sister.
The movie started in the grocery store as Sally and David were shopping. A little girl was following them around gawking at David and his hand movements in the store. At one point Sally made a remark to the girl. Sally talked to David while in the store, although he seemed to be coming out of his skin and in deep distress during the trip.
My first reaction was why did he not have something in his hands to occupy himself and make the trip less intense. He appeared to be a teenager, and it was not known until the end that his age was sixteen. Through flashbacks we see David as young as five. I thought after so many years dealing with the disability some preparation was in order for community activities. A fidget toy or item could have helped David self regulate his behaviors, instead he was seen twisting his hands and moving about awkwardly.

It is Fine! EVERYTHING IS FINE. is a 2007 film funded and directed by Crispin Glover. Production is credited to Glover's Volcanic Eruptions company.
The film was written by and stars Utah writer-actor Steven C. Stewart, who also appears in What Is It? He died of complications from cerebral palsy in 2001, only one month after principal filming wrapped.
Glover has said that the script was in the style of a 1970s made-for-TV movie, and said in an online chat that "It's an autobiographical, psycho-sexual, fantastical retelling of [Stewart's] point-of-view of life." Aside from the opening and closing scenes that were filmed in a nursing home, It is Fine. Everything is Fine! was shot entirely at David Brother's sound stage in Salt Lake City, Utah. Glover has stated that it is "probably the best film [he'll] ever work on in [his] entire career."

Mozart and the Whale is a 2005 feature-length motion picture starring Josh Hartnett and Radha Mitchell, and directed by Petter Næss.
The film tells the story of two people with Asperger syndrome (a form of autism). Donald (Josh Hartnett) runs a small self-help group for people on the autism spectrum who are more affected by their autism than he is. Isabelle (Radha Mitchell) is referred to the group by her therapist. Mozart and the Whale is a fictional account, using characters loosely based on the real-life relationship of Jerry Newport and Mary Meinel (now Mary Newport).

Immortal Beloved is a 1994 film about the life of composer Ludwig van Beethoven (played by Gary Oldman). The story follows Beethoven's secretary and first biographer Anton Schindler (Jeroen Krabbé) as he attempts to ascertain the true identity of the Unsterbliche Geliebte (Immortal Beloved) addressed in three letters found in the late composer's private papers. Schindler journeys throughout the Austrian Empire interviewing women who might be potential candidates as well as through Beethoven's own tumultuous life, the first film from Icon Productions that is not distributed by Warner Bros.
Critical reaction for Immortal Beloved was mixed. From the 29 reviews collected from notable publications by popular review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, reviews tended towards the positive, with an overall approval rating of 55%.[3] Of Rotten Tomatoes' "top critics", however, Roger Ebert was highly complimentary of the film. He gave it 3½ stars out of four, stating in his review: "Immortal Beloved has clearly been made by people who feel Beethoven directly in their hearts". He asserted that Oldman "at first seems an unlikely choice... then we see that he is right".[4] Janet Maslin also offered a positive review, stating: "thanks to its hugely effective use of Beethoven's most thrilling, tumultuous music, this film exerts much the same hypnotic power". She praised the performance of Oldman, writing that "he captures Beethoven as a believably brilliant figure struggling with his deafness and other demons".[5]
