Stevie Wonder (born Stevland Hardaway Judkins on May 13, 1950, name later changed to Stevland Hardaway Morris),[1] is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. Wonder has recorded more than thirty top ten hits, won twenty-two Grammy Awards[2] (a record for a solo artist), plus one for lifetime achievement, won an Academy Award for Best Song and been inducted into both the Rock and Roll and Songwriters halls of fame. Opera star Luciano Pavarotti once referred to him in a concert as a "great, great musical genius".

Blind from infancy, Wonder signed with Motown Records as a pre-adolescent at age twelve, and continues to perform and record for the label to this day. He has nine U.S. number-one hits to his name and album sales totaling more than 100 million units. Wonder has recorded several critically acclaimed albums and hit singles, and writes and produces songs for many of his labelmates and outside artists as well. A multi-instrumentalist, Wonder plays the piano, synthesizer, harmonica, congas, drums, bongos, bass guitar, organ, melodica, and clavinet. In his early career, he was best known for his harmonica work, but today he is better known for his keyboard skills.

PostPosted: Mon Sep 17, 2007 1:50 pm    Post subject: Professor Cuthbert Calculus Reply with quote

Calculus seeks to benefit mankind by inventions such as a pill that cures alcoholism by making alcohol taste horrible to the patient. These inventions are usually disliked by Captain Haddock, although Calculus usually interprets this the other way round: his deafness often preventing him from hearing Haddock's real opinion.

I often think of him as a dear old Uncle

PostPosted: Tue Sep 18, 2007 12:33 pm    Post subject: Super Man - Chris Reeve Reply with quote

Christopher D'Olier Reeve[1] (September 25, 1952 – October 10, 2004) was an American actor, director, producer and writer. He established himself early as a Juilliard-trained stage actor before portraying Superman/Kal-El/Clark Kent in four films

On May 27, 1995, Reeve became paralyzed from the neck-down, after his horse had a refusal and he fell off.[48] He had no recollection of the incident. Witnesses said that Buck started the jump over the third fence, and then suddenly stopped. Someone said that a rabbit spooked the horse, and another person claimed that it might have been a shadow. Reeve held on and the bridle, the bit, and the reins were pulled off the horse and tied his hands together. He landed headfirst on the other side of the fence. His helmet prevented any brain damage, but the impact of his 215 pound body hitting the ground shattered his first and second vertebrae. Reeve had not been breathing for three minutes before paramedics arrived. He was taken to the local hospital, and then flown by helicopter to the University of Virginia medical center.[49]

Dear Shivani,

My name is  Karthik, All the friends call by  that, please do that. All the people are welcome to add and inspire us. Being disabled is not the end, have inspiration, you can go a long way, like you have done.

Here is a great hero

Born and educated in the city of Mysore, Chandrasekhar was infatuated with cricket from a very early age. Overcoming a polio attack which withered his right wrist as a child, so that he always used his left arm for throwing, he became one of the most successful leg spin bowlers in cricket history

The first double amputee to climb to the top of Mt Everest was almost speechless when he reached the summit and called his wife by satellite phone.

Mark Inglis, 47, who lost both legs in a climbing accident 24 years ago, was suffering an attack of laryngitis and managed only to croak: "I did it!"

Selected as Great Disabled Persons -Top TEN

Sorce http://www.bbc.co.uk/ouch/yourspace/gdbprofiles.shtml

Many people may be surprised to see Britain's great wartime leader historian and artist on this list, but Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill had multiple impairments (depending on what you read) - although he is perhaps best known for his "black dog".

Churchill experienced depression for most of his life but particularly in his later years. Famously he came to call these dark moods his "black dog". He died in 1965.

Churchill described himself as having a "speech impediment," which he consistently worked to overcome; after many years, he finally stated, "My impediment is no hindrance". Although the Stuttering Foundation has claimed that Churchill stuttered, the Churchill Centre has concluded that he lisped.[7] Churchill's impediment may also have been cluttering, which would fit more with his lack of attention to unimportant details and his very secure ego. Weiss suggests that Churchill may have "excelled because of, rather than in spite of his cluttering".[8]

In June 1953, when he was 78, Churchill suffered a stroke after a meeting with the Italian Prime Minister Alcide De Gasperi at 10 Downing Street. News of this was kept from the public and from Parliament, who were told that Churchill was suffering from exhaustion. He went to his country home, Chartwell, to recuperate from the effects of the stroke which had affected his speech and ability to walk. He returned to public life in October to make a speech at a Conservative Party conference at Margate, having decided that if he couldn't make the speech, he would retire as Prime Minister — but he was able to deliver it without problems

Susie Maroney (born 15 November 1974, Cronulla, New South Wales), is an Australian marathon swimmer. Maroney was just four (4) years old when she started swimming to help combat her asthma.

She and her twin brother, Sean (or Shaun), were both born with cerebral palsy. Susie Maroney has another brother, Michael, and two older sisters, Lindy and Karen. Sean (or Shaun) Maroney, who died in 2002, was a triathlete. They initially kept their condition secret out of fear of ridicule

One of only a few known photographs of Roosevelt in a wheelchairFranklin D. Roosevelt's paralysis has become a major part of his image today, even though during his life it was kept from public view and rarely discussed in public. Roosevelt's paralysis was originally diagnosed to be paralytic poliomyelitis.[1] However, retrospective analysis favors the diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome.

PostPosted: Thu Sep 27, 2007 2:31 pm    Post subject: The Creater of one day Cricket _ KERRY PACKER Reply with quote

Kerry Francis Bullmore Packer AC (17 December 1937 – 26 December 2005), son of Sir Frank Packer, was an Australian publishing, media and gaming tycoon who owned the Nine Network. He was famous for his outspoken nature, wealth, expansive business empire and clashes with the Australian Taxation Office and the Costigan Commission.

At the time of his death, Packer was the richest and one of the most influential men in Australia. In 2004 Business Review Weekly magazine estimated Packer's net worth at AUD 6.5 billion ($6.5 billion; about USD 5.4 billion).

is primary schooling suffered greatly when he was stricken with a severe bout of poliomyelitis at age eight, and he was confined to an iron lung for nine months. His father apparently thought little of his son's abilities, once cruelly describing him as "the family idiot", yet Kerry steered PBL to heights far beyond anything his father or brother achieved. In an interview with Ray Martin, Packer claimed that he was "academically stupid" and survived school at Geelong Grammar School through sport. Even throughout his adult life, Packer apparently found reading difficult, and is believed to have suffered from dyslexia . In an interview, former employee Trevor Sykes stated that "He didn't read much on the printed page. If you didn't want Kerry to read something, you wrote more than a one-page memo."

Packer reportedly suffered as many as eight heart attacks. In 1990, while playing polo at Warwick Farm, Sydney, he suffered a heart attack that left him clinically dead for six minutes. Packer was revived and later famously told reporter Ray Martin on A Current Affair, "The good news is there is no devil. The bad news is there is no heaven." It was not common for an ambulance to have a defibrillator at the time - it was purely by chance that the ambulance which responded to the call had one fitted. After recovering, Packer donated a large sum to the New South Wales Ambulance Service to pay for equipping all NSW ambulances with a portable defibrillator (now colloquially known as "Packer Whackers"). He told Nick Greiner "I'll go you 50/50", and the NSW State government paid the other half of the cost. Packer underwent heart bypass surgery in New York in 1998.

He also suffered from a chronic kidney condition for many years, and in 2000 he made headlines when his long-serving helicopter pilot, Nick Ross, donated one of his own kidneys to Packer for transplantation.

The transplant was covered in detail by the Australian TV documentary program Australian Story, a rare occasion on which Packer granted a media interview (and, to the surprise of many, not to his own network; Australian Story is produced by the public network, ABC).

After recovering from the operation, Packer launched an organ transplant association in memory of cricketer David Hookes.

Stevenson's portrayal of Silver has greatly influenced the modern iconography of the pirate. Silver has a parrot, named Captain Flint in honor of his former captain, who generally perches on Silver's shoulder. Silver has lost one of his legs, and uses a crutch to help him get around. He is married to a woman of African descent.

PostPosted: Wed Oct 03, 2007 4:03 pm    Post subject: Ekalavya Reply with quote

In the epic Mahabharata, Ekalavya (Sanskrit: एकलव्य, ékalavya) is a young prince of the Nishadha tribes, and a member of a low caste, who nevertheless aspires to study archery in the gurukul of Dronacharya. After being rejected by Drona, Ekalavya embarks upon a program of self-study in the presence of a clay image of Drona. He achieves a level of skill equal to that of Arjuna, Drona's favorite and most accomplished pupil. Fearful that Ekalavya will excel him, Arjuna begs Drona to take action. Drona goes to Ekalavya and demands that Ekalavya turn over his right thumb as a teacher's fee. The loyal Ekalavya cripples himself, and thereby ruins his prospects as an archer, by severing his thumb and giving it to Drona.

PostPosted: Thu Oct 04, 2007 11:31 am    Post subject: Ludwig van Beethoven Reply with quote

Beethoven is acknowledged as one of the giants of Western classical music; occasionally he is referred to as one of the "three Bs" (along with Bach and Brahms) who epitomize that tradition. He was also a pivotal figure in the transition from 18th Century musical classicism to 19th Century romanticism, and his influence on subsequent generations of composers was profound.[1

Around 1796, Beethoven began to lose his hearing.[7] He suffered a severe form of tinnitus, a "ringing" in his ears that made it hard for him to perceive and appreciate music; he would also avoid conversation. He left Vienna for a time for the small Austrian town of Heiligenstadt, where he wrote his Heiligenstadt Testament. He resolved to continue living for and through his art. Over time, his hearing loss became profound: there is a well-attested story that, at the end of the premiere of his Ninth Symphony, he had to be turned around to see the tumultuous applause of the audience; hearing nothing, he began to weep.[citation needed] Beethoven's hearing loss did not affect his ability to compose music, but it made concerts — lucrative sources of income — increasingly difficult.

PostPosted: Fri Oct 05, 2007 1:20 pm    Post subject: Tony Greig Reply with quote

Anthony "Tony" William Greig (born October 6, 1946) is a former test cricketer and currently a commentator.

Born in South Africa, Greig qualified to play for England by virtue of his Scottish father. He was a tall (6' 7") all-rounder who bowled both medium pace and off spin. He became captain of the national side from 1975 to 1977, and was also captain of the Sussex county side. Greig's younger brother Ian, also played test cricket.
Greig first suffered an epileptic fit at the age of 14, during a tennis match. Successfully controlling the condition with medication and self management, few knew about it for much of his playing career. In 1971-72, he collapsed on the field during his first match for Eastern Province and half a dozen teammates were required to hold down his large frame. The incident was explained away as heat stroke. Returning from the tour of Australia in 1975, Greig suffered another fit at Heathrow Airport. His affliction became public during the Packer furore, when a number of commentators questioned his judgment in the matter and speculated that epilepsy impaired his ability to make decisions. These uninformed opinions were central to Greig's decision to leave England in 1979. "I am proud to have achieved so much despite such a handicap," he later wrote

PostPosted: Mon Oct 08, 2007 11:04 am    Post subject: Thomas Alva Edison Reply with quote

Thomas Alva Edison (February 11, 1847 – October 18, 1931) was an American inventor and businessman who developed many devices that greatly influenced life around the world, including the phonograph and a long lasting light bulb. Dubbed "The Wizard of Menlo Park" by a newspaper reporter, he was one of the first inventors to apply the principles of mass production to the process of invention, and therefore is often credited with the creation of the first industrial research laboratory.

Edison is considered one of the most prolific inventors in history, holding 1,093 U.S. patents in his name, as well as many patents in the United Kingdom, France and Germany.

The cause of Edison's deafness has been attributed to a bout of scarlet fever during childhood and recurring untreated middle ear infections. Edison around the middle of his career attributed the hearing loss to being struck on the ears by a train conductor when his chemical lab in a boxcar caught fire. In his later years he modified the story to say the injury occurred when the conductor, in helping him onto a moving train, lifted him by the ears.[3][4]
