Mumbai to get first college for the deaf
Priya Ramakrishnan
Yash Sharma has been hearing-impaired from birth. But for years he struggled with his studies because his parents admitted him into a regular school.
Sharma, now 24, often considered dropping out. After finally passing his school-leaving examinations recently, he is now looking forward to college.
Thankfully, higher studies may not be as much of a struggle. On Saturday, Ishara Foundation, an organisation that works to improve education among the hearing
impaired, announced plans for a degree college for the deaf.
The institution, a tie-up with the University of Central Lancashire in the UK, will offer a three year Bachelor of Arts programme in Applied Sign Linguistics.
"The curriculum is being developed by us in Britain. It will be approved in April, but we still have to work out logistics such as accreditation and affiliation,"
says Prof Ulrike Zeshan of the University of Central Lancashire.
The college will also offer a "zero programme" year, starting 2008, for students who have cleared their Class 10 examinations.
"The standard of hearing-impaired students from regular schools is often quite low because they have to cope with so much. Since they can’t be directly
admitted to a three-year BA programme, they will be taught reading, writing and computer skills in the zero year," says Meher Dadabhoy, founder trustee
of Ishara.
Those who clear the zero year literacy programme will then be inducted into the BA course. "The focus of the curriculum is to create teachers from, and
for, the hearing-impaired community who can go on to teach through sign language. Initially, Ishara’s teachers will act as instructors," adds Prof Zeshan.
Sharma thinks this is a good idea. Speaking through a sign-language instructor, he says: "Most of us find it difficult to compete with students in a regular
college. The curriculum is very hard, and we have to stick to a mechanical or technical course. But now with our own college, more avenues will open up
to us."
Ishara’s college for the deaf also received support from unexpected quarters. US consul general in Mumbai Jim Cunningham, who was present at the inaugural
meet, reiterates the need for a separate institution.
"America has two colleges for the hearing-impaired, and it has made a big difference to their lives. Setting up a college here was certainly a need of the
hour," he says.

The courses have not yet been introduced.
Now they are on English Literacy program and the training is undertaken with the help of sign language tutors who teach English Language.
Also since your English is very good you could opt to become a teacher of English language there if a vacancy exists.
Get in touch with Meher Dadabhoy of Ali Yavar Jung Institute in Bandra. She sits in the ISC Room on the Ground Floor next to the Director's Room ( I think in the C Wing). She is a trustee at Ishaara.
Alternatively get in touch with my friend, Sunil Sahasrabudhe he is one of the staff members in Ishaara. He is a very helpful as well as a cheerful guy. You could meet him at Ishaara. Tell him that I had sent you there.
You could know more about Ishaara from the following link www.ishaara.org
Hope the above information suffices

Why do you want to do the courses from special education set up, when your Englsh skills are above average.
I advise you can join the thee year correspondece courses in graduation and post graduations from Mumbai University , Kalina Centre in Santacruz East
Get back to me if you need more information

I know Sunil Sahasrabuddhe very well.He is counted among my list of good friends.
I was thinking of graduating from IGNOU which commences on June this year...as I wont be attending regular classes. The reason behind this is my job which will keep me on toes and I will be paying for my studies thru my own money, the salary that I will get from the job.But if Ishaara exempt me from regular classes then maybe I will attend this course.
Sunil had clearly told me that I am most welcome to work in Ishaara but they need a Graduate. What am I to do then when they have their own rules in hiring even thou I have a potential and ability to do so?Anyway I will go to AYJIHH and meet the trustee and see what comes out.

When you are currently based in Mumbai then why do you want to go for IGNOU.
At this moment dont approach IGNOU coz their failure rate is very high, You being in Mumbai go for distance education from Mumbai University, study materials will be given plus you will get the same in the market too.
This is the best advice I can give you
Didnt understand by what you mean - it seems you already have a job ???????/////

I will surely take ur advice and go to the Mumbai University and see what can be done.I will look up on its site. But if the study course is expensive then I will have no option than to choose IGNOU.Heard that Yashwant Rao Chavan University too is good?????Am having apprehension in it as I have never heard of many passing out from Yashwant Rao.
Who said I ALREADY have a job????I had told in my last post that I have gone for an interview with IBM which came out satisfactorily but I am yet to be selected. They have given me a week's waiting time....Still I havent received any calls/text from them.I dont know what is keeping them so long, what is holding them back....I will have to personally go and check up with them if the security allows me to....because just simply for checking they dont permit. But I will try coz of my current problem.

There is no point in checking with IBM personally if they were serious they would have definitely called you or ur placement officer.
And also remember getting a job without the relevant qualifications is difficult ......... so try to get qualified first and then start working in a corporate organizations
Meanwhile if you just want to fund for your educaiton then take some data entry jobs, tuitions etc
Mumbai university courses are maximum 2500-3000 rupees per year.
Mumbai university is more famous that the other colleges you mentioned
You can do till post graduation ......... I myself done my post graduation from there
Admissions will start in July August - for degree courses you should be 12th pass if you are not then the other option for you is to do the one year preparatory course leading to degree from IGNOU and then join for their graduation programs

So u mean to say that I have to do first BPP from IGNOU then carry on with Mumbai University for graduation programme????
I am matric passed.....Even I know that IGNOU has 3 months prep course pre-Graduation.
As for IBM,what u say makes sense.................
To get qualified first I need a job.Data entry job isnt sufficient....not only I need job to fund my education but to help me lead life on my own.To be dependent.
