The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and Delhi University (DU) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up an Information and Communication Technology Training Centre for physically-challenged students.

The centre will be the first of its kind in providing the latest IT skills to economically backward and physically challenged students.

As per the agreement, the NTPC foundation will provide equipment and software and DU will provide teaching and support staff for the centre, to take care of the day to day functioning of the centre.

Students with visual, hearing, mobility and cognitive impairment will benefit from the newly setup IT centre.

Thanks Vikas for posting this.

This is a nice initiative taken by both NTPC and Delhi University.

But then it is in the North, I would be glad if NTPC sets up similar training centres in all the Metropolitian Cities in India, as everyone of us can benefit from the same.

Also other PSUs can learn from them and take the initiative to come up with various programmes.

It is always believed that PSUs are the biggest defaulters of the Disability Act. But then most of them can take an example from NTPC , and learn to implement reservations orders and conduct other programmes that help the disadvantaged in the society.

My heartfelt thanks to the Chairman and Board of Trustees of NTPC.

Regards
Thomas

hi,

I have been an IT professional for nearly 25 years. But Learning any thing from class Room is impossible. Most of the time the real help is reference books/Manual or help CDs like MSDN, or online Forums.

If you learn any language, the patttern is the same. like if Condtion, for,do while loops etc... The tough job is the how to go about any project, for which the resurece and tool analysis has to be done.

Sorry to say I have never learned in the class room, study the book before hand ask annoying questions to the faculty and fellow students.

Learning can be done only by self. If I remember correctly the grasping power of a student on what taught in a classroom is only 40%.

I am  practicing on RHCE on my own by installing and reinstalling Linux on my spare machine. I have decided  not to attend training. Any how I have roughly around 4 Years

That is my humble suggestion. There is a saying. Where there is a Will, There is a way

Mr Iyer. I don't agree with you on this here. But then don't feel bad - this platform is for exchange of information and of course there may be instances when one membes opinion does'nt suit another, but then we are here for a healthy debate. So no need to feel depressed or disheartned.

You say that you have been a IT Professional for the last so many years, hence if today you want to learn something from the books directly you can do it most probably because you have an idea of the software language. Online learning is always good for people with disabilities but then it does not suit everyone especially those who have no exposure to computer programming basics.

Now when it comes to incumbents with hearing disability - they are always on the look out for specialised coaching in all fronts - Education and Job Trainings. .And there is a lack of special facilities for them. Hence institutions like these are the need of the hour, one cannot totally ignore establishment of such instiutions by claiming that one can learn everything through self help.

I am a Commerce Graduate with Accounts but I completed my M Com with Management, now I am preparing myself for a second M Com with specialisation in Accounts - and I am doing this without anyone's help - why because i have done my Graduation in Accounts - so have an idea of accounts- similarly is your case - the education background comes into focus here. There self help comes into the picture.

But when it comes to IT not all PWDs especially the hearing impaired can study on their own. we will be able to grasp everything and anything, I am 101 percent confident on this, only if the right kind of training and environment is provided for us. Take for example - these days a lot of VH candidates are Programmers in IBM, Why is that so...........Because of the special software that is made available for them to study and work, but when it comes to hearing impaired we need such kind of assistance , training etc where specialised or dedicated people coach us. Not at all possible to learn everything in the first go through CDs, Manuals etc

Sir,

I have thought  about  it and may be you are right. In my case I am fiddler, whatever the new software comes, the beta version used to come to me for testing and that was my job, the only way I can learn ois to fiddle around it. The way I learnt powerbuilder, visual basic and D2K,VBA,API was through the use of beta cds.

May be you are right. But that is the way I liked learn and give feed back and not through any class
