INTEREST & ENTHUSIASUM LED BLIND PERSON OUT OF DARKNESS

Sight is not so necessary in this world.  What you need is determination land an inner zeal to succeed says Mr.Satheeshan with a broad smile writ large on his face.  Satheeshan is no philosopher nor preacher, but a blind youth who has achieved a goal that even the sighted find difficult to attain,, first rank in MA skcociology from Mangalore University.  Probably the first blind student to be awarded the first erank in any subject from any Indian university, Satheeshan’s feat is noteworthy as it has come in face of stiff competition from sighted and privileged friends. Recently , Satheeshan received the gold medal, for his first rank in MA sociology  at Mangalore University’s 28th Convocation from UGC Chairman Prof  Sukhadeo Thorat.  Hailing from a small place named Bebija near Cherkalam in Kasargod District of Kerala State, Satheeshan was born blind in one eye.  He lost vision in the other eye too when he was in IV standard student. His father died soon after, leaving the boy literally groping in the dark.  Satheeshan studied in a school for the blind with help from locals and political parties.  His family, comprising his mother and brother who isa daily wage laborers, couldn’t afford paying for his education.  But they knocked in vain on the doors of every big hospital in Manipal, Mangalore, Vellore and Chennai to get his sight restored.  Docotrs attributed his loops of sight to some neurological problem.  He thanks Dr.P L Dharma of the varsity Department of Political Science for getting him a computer that reads out text to him. Satheeshan also remembers with reverence, the faculty of sociology including Dr.Anita Ravishankar, friends and classmates whole helped him in every distress.  Having completed his BA in sociology from Farook College, Calicut, lhe is currently pursuing B.Ed in KE Sahib Training College, Kannur.  Now that his is armed with MA he plans to enroll as a research fellow in Hyderabad Univerysity and to research on “the sociology of research, i.e. How far does the large number of researches done every year benefit the society”.  Incidentally, Satheeshan is blessed with marvelous voice. He is a flautist too.  His renditions, both vocal and instrumental, have won him several awards, He has also won the ‘EXCELLENT AWARD FOR THE BLIND’ in 2005.
