Hello All,

SPORTS IS MUST!!!! The most obvious impact of disability is the limitation of one’s ability to engage in physical activity. It leads to deconditioning and reduced capacities for daily living requirements. It ultimately results into further deterioration of activities, which is termed as disabilitative cycle. Bring the disabled persons into mainstream of life requires offerisng them all possible opportunities, especially physical therapy, to improve their motor capacities. In this regard exercising inside water permits them, irrespective of the handicap, to moove quite freely without calipers, sticks, cruches, or wheelchairs. Such an independent exercise programme through unhurting active routines in water is called Aquatherapy. It is the most valuable and latest thereapy that is considered as the ultimates step towards the rehabilitation of disability.

Hi Manoj,

Yes indeed, there is one swimming pool I know which is very wheelchair friendly and it's in the DDA Sports Complex, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi.

Hello Afrs,

I am so glad you brought in this topic. Swimming has many advantages and leads to immeasurable benefits which simply aims for 'ability in water' as opposed to 'disability on land' !!!

Absolutely Vishal, exercises inside water open up circulation to the whole body, helping reduce pain and give a feeling of well-being.

Hello Guys,

Nice to see that people are activily discussing their views over sports that helps, especially swimming!! Well said Afrs & Vishal, infact I would also like to share my views about the tremendous advantages of swimming as I'm on a wheelchair and have had been swimming since a decade now!

Water actually imparts a soft flexible resistance and allows greater and free movements with less strain, which is quite soothing and relaxing. It frees the disable person from jolting factor of gravity on dry land. Swimming involves most of muscle groups in their healthy flexing and stretching. The affected body parts are treated and the unaffected muscles toned and conditioned leading to increased strength, stamina, flexibility and coordination. Swimming improves the concept of space, time, form, force application, rhythm, balance, reaction time and concentration. Water also stimulates skin, eyes and ears and tends to be useful for people with learning disabilities too.

Cheers lovely people!

Swimming also helps in deeper and rhythmical breathing which increases the metabolic rate and cardiovascular fitness rapidly!!!!

Hello again lovely guys,

I wanted to again stress on the importance of swimming for disabled persons. I have truly experienced complete independence of movements and a feeling of freedom from aids. I would suggest all disable people like me to get set and start swimming as it's never too late in life !!!!

Thanks!

hi guys,

it's a good discussion about tha advantages of swimming.
one more positive effect is that it prevents obesity,, which can prove to be a bane for a disabled person. also, swimming or any physical exercise releases endorphins( ' feel good' molecules), which enhance the feeling of well being and reduce stress.

I agree with Puneet because swimming also gives me the taste of liberty of moving without my crutch, my caliper… I have been benefited from swimming a lot. But unfortunately, none of the Pools in Kolkata are disabled friendly, as Delhi, so I have to take help from other persons. The benefits of swimming has been mentioned earlier, so I am not them writing again, but I suggest, every disabled person should keep swimming in their daily routine

Dear Sayan,

Its great to know that you swim. Me being a couch potato am always very impressed by person persuing some sport like yourself.

Well yes we do have one accessible pool in Delhi but I will like you to give your inputs on the post "The other side of the Story!" which is in the sports and recreation section itself. It a a post about the issues that the management of the accessible pool have expressed. It will be great to have your perspective.

warm regards,
Shivani

I don't know how to swim, but I am willing to learn it. I agree, we should have a sport for exercise.

Swimming is a great exercise that makes use of both the upper and lower body. I think I'll benefit a lot from swimming. Guess I better enroll myself in a swimming class.
