Hello all,
Sorry for this rather delayed posting - somehow it skipped me altogether to introduce myself right at the start to all members here. Well, like they say 'better late than never'...
I am a non-disabled member of the forum. I did all my schooling from an inclusive school in Delhi and have grown up with the belief that people are all the same. But soon enough, after I finished my schooling and stepped into the real world, I realised the discrimination disabled people had to face. After completing schooling, I graduated as an Occupational Therapist from Calcutta and trained in Rehabilitation Management in Italy & UK before landing up with a job at the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre (ISIC) in New Delhi. While at ISIC, I attended a UN workshop on Barrier-free environments in 2000 and realised that this was the field I wanted to work in.
I then went back to UK to pursue a formal education in construction management- specialising in Inclusive Environments, and have just finished my postgrad recently. To promote accessibility and employment opportunities for PWD, I got together with Sachin & Shivani and we have been working in this area trying to make some little change in whatever way we can - atleast in our own little spheres within this world. Recently the three of us set up AccessAbility and started this forum, hoping to form a community of like minded people.
At present I am in the UK, working for Emergency Services in Reading as an Occupational Therapist (a job I took up about 4 years ago to pay for my post-graduation) and try to support AccessAbility in my spare time. Im eagerly waiting to relocate back to India for good this September and work full time for AccessAbility.
Well thats my story - sorry for the long essay (I had to make up for the delay in posting this )
See you around,
Vikas
