CONFIDENT: Disabled women participating in a sports event in Tiruchi.
TIRUCHI : The problems and challenges confronting physically disabled persons, particularly women, are often less realised even by their dear and near ones. Stressing the need to analyse these and other serious issues and also to find out a solution for the same, Action on Disability and Development India (ADD INDIA), Tiruchi, an organisation working for the socio-economic uplift of physically disabled women in rural areas in Tamil Nadu, organised a two-day conference `Vannangal 2006' to mark the celebration of the International Women's Day. Over 75 physically challenged women from eleven districts, including Tirunelveli, Madurai, Dindigul, Pondicherry, Villupuram and Cuddalore, participated in the conference. Divided into groups, they interacted on various topics - matrimonial, legal, clinical, economic and social issues. Getting into wedlock was a major problem for the less privileged women, mainly because of the social stigma, they said. "Even if it happens, these women are given in marriage as the second or even third wife to take care of their in-laws or children," pointed out A. Lakshmi, Programme Manager. A lawyer, Geetha, who spoke on sexual harassment against disabled women, cited a specific case to explain the agony of such women. Prof. Radha Bai, a visually disabled faculty from Government Arts College for Women, Pudukottai, appealed to the audience to identify and nurture their talent. Illiteracy and dependence on parents for livelihood stood in the way of empowerment of women. Literacy and economic independence were the keys to their empowerment. The physically disabled women decided to submit a memorandum to the respective District Collectors, seeking to set up ramps at all the polling booths during the forthcoming Assembly elections. "Physically disabled men and women do not have adequate facility to exercise their fundamental right", says Ms. Lakshmi. Several competitions were organised as part of the programme to bring out the talent of the disabled women. Wheel chair race, rangoli, poster making were some of the competitions, in which many women participated. Sr. Maria Kamalam, faculty from Holy Cross College, inaugurated the conference.
