Dear Friends,

This is about large hospitals making money by exploiting someones unfortunate experience. A young girl who is my wife's friend on orkut underwent an amputation. A very brave young girl of barely 15. She had an accident and lost her leg just before her10th board exams. She has not only gone on to give the exams, albeit has done well also. Great job. But here ends the good news. She is being treated at an upscale hospital in Bangalore. Due to the emotional quotient the parents are sparing nothing. This hospital has already replaced four sockets at the patients cost and are now showing a great gesture by giving a free fifth one.

We all know that there is conciderable amout of swelling and initially the shrinkage is quite rapid causing the socket to loosen. Instead of advising the patient to wear pressure sleeve for some time to get the swelling to subside to a somewhat stable state, they are using the garb of emotional support and such intangibles to make their money. Aggreed, that a patient needs reassurance and confidence building to ensure continued psychological stability and avoid depression. For this there is a pneumatic socket which has an inflatable sleeve, in which air pressure can be increased as and when required. This avoids wastage of money in changing sockets frequently and gives freedom of movement to the individual. The hospital has not even considered to educate the parents and girl about this. Otto Bock, Endolite etc, have their branches in various cities in the country. The Ottobock doesn't have any low cost options for the patients. They have stopped making the Laminated and Polypropylene socket. Carbon fibre sockets are the rage these days and each costs Rs15,000/-. This leaves no choice to the individual.

There is a requirement of health care professionals taking a holistic view of the issue and financial aspects need to be given a relook.
