I am writing this not to hurt any one, but I only want to open up the situations that a disabled face today after employment.
I have been having some questions in mind for a long time and I just want to get cleared of all this confusions
Today most companies have their own individual CSR Programs. Some of them don’t have anything related to do with employment of disabled; they are more focused on education, donation in cash and kind, environmental friendly practices etc.
But there is another group who claim to be Equal Opportunity Employers and do give a thought in hiring people with disabilities. Though the number of such groups is not so encouraging.
We all know that attrition rate is very high in the BPO and software industry. Now these very MNCs are now looking at the invisible talent pool – that is people with disabilities just to beat the attrition rate.
Though I admire this fact, but I see a lot of injustices on the other end too. Just to beat the attrition rate does it seem fair to be hired and paid less than what you or a normal person can get elsewhere for performing the same kind of job. Does it make sense that they provide employment of disabled people – and the appointment is made on a contract basis for a long time?
I know several disabled people who wish to change jobs because they are working for a less salary in spite of the fact that they are qualified and experienced. But when these very people approach prospective employers armed with the necessary qualifications and experience still they are asked whether they are ready to take an entry level position. Does this sound fair?
I don’t like to name anyone here; for e.g. a well known Indian BPO which has recently hired people with disabilities in large numbers won’t consider any kind of experience they straightaway hire freshers.Does it look nice? Just to create a name for themselves these people do like this? Or is it just to cut down costs simply because of the fact that we won’t leave for a better job elsewhere. Are we not encouraged to climb up the ladder? Are we not encouraged to be sent abroad on project assignments? In many cases the companies identifies the position where the individual has to work, the qualified candidate has no say in this? Don’t you think that we too have our career objectives and would like to see them fulfilled? In some cases companies do hire people with disabilities, but when they are put under a particular employer he/she is totally in a dilemma on how to deal with the disabled employee, in some cases they even vent out their anger on the employee. Here I know disabled individuals who are graduates and they earn only 3500/4000 Rupees. These very people too have families to support like parents, sisters etc.Just imagine with such paltry salary is it possible to live decently in a Metropolitan city like Mumbai. These people all could not find jobs earlier – so because something is better than nothing they lave landed and still working in these companies.
Recently I had attended a conference, so during the break session when I was waiting for tea, I met one of my hearing impaired friends who was working in a leading private bank for the last 4 years for 12K PM. He told me there was not a rupee more increase in the pay even though he worked all these years. A particular well know figure was standing nearby and she heard our conversation – she straightaway told the guy that is enough. You have a job, then why do you want to take another job. After all something is better than nothing. Just imagine this lady may be earning at least a lakh per month, and when another disabled person desires to see even an increase of 1000 Rupees in his pay, she is there standing in between. I even heard her telling -THIS IS THE PROBLEM OF HIRING PEOPLE LIKE YOU – it’s the employee and not the employer is the cause of the problem. Does anyone agree to that? We all are still working and perhaps a day may come when we wish to change jobs to climb the ladder or may be we may leave for a better pay packet elsewhere or may be we even want to go abroad.
SO IF WE THINK THAT WE SHOULD BE TREATED JUST LIKE NORMAL PEOPLE THEN I STRONGLY BELIEVE SUCH THINGS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN.
Does anyone agree with me?????????

Hello Thomas,
That is really shocking - especially when coming from a BPO that calls itself an equal opportunity employer ...... i just fail to see any equality in what they are doing.
Please go ahead & name + shame the BPO here - as I had not heard of this before & will like to know which BPO it is.
Thanks

Hi Thomas,
That is a very interesting post. With a lot of common issues that all of us may be facing.
I am shocked by the ladies attitute.
[QUOTE]
THIS IS THE PROBLEM OF HIRING PEOPLE LIKE YOU
But I can believe that something like that can happen.
Your point that MNC's look for PWD to beat there attrition rate....well at one side it is a great marketing line for recruiter like us, but yes I must admit, I have never looked at it from the other side....that how good is this statement from the point of view of inclusion.
Well now after years of work, I co-partner firm and am therefore out of the employment ladder but have faced it earlier. I remember as a hotel management graduate who was now disabled I counldn't even get a job of a telephone operater in a hotel.
My most recent experience has been as a Manager of CSR intitiative for a company. The initiative was all about accessibility -- well because we were a non profit making part of the company me along with my team were bundled into an environment that was 1. too far for me to travel 2. too dirty for us to operate from. Well these may be issues that one can deal with... but what was unexceptable was that a lady who had no idea of accessibility or disability was made to sit on my head after my completing 10 months of great working without her....come on if even after educating myself and having such a extensive experience if I needed a brainless lady as my boss, then definately I was not right for the job.
Now the company continues with just heavy media publicity (in the name of disability) which ofcourse can be purchased easily by big companies like these with no quality. Absolute loosers.
regards,
Shivani

Hello all,
From this thread I have realised that some people may be reluctant to Name & Shame others, specially when it concerns discrimination inflicted by present or potential employers.
I have, therefore, now made some changes to the forum so that now one can Anonymously post in the 'Name & Shame' sub-category under the category 'Reviews & Recommendations' -- but do remember that if you post when logged in with your username, then the posting will NOT be anonymous. To make an anonymous posting please make sure that you 'log out' first and then post as you will normally do.
I have also enabled anonymous posting in the 'Comments & Suggestions' section.
Now, even the non-registered guests will be able to post in these two sections.
Hope members will find this useful.
Regards,
