Amélie is a 2001 romantic comedy film directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Its original French title is Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain ("The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain"). Written by Jeunet with Guillaume Laurant, the film is a whimsical depiction of contemporary Parisian life, set in Montmartre. It tells the story of a shy waitress, played by Audrey Tautou, who decides to change the lives of those around her for the better, while struggling with her own isolation. The film was an international co-production between companies in France and Germany.

Amélie won best film at the European Film Awards; it won four César Awards (including Best Film and Best Director), two BAFTA Awards (including Best Original Screenplay), and was nominated for five Academy Awards. (See below for other awards and recognition.)

Refrigerator Mothers is a documentary released in 2003 by Kartemquin Films for PBS's P.O.V. series. The film paints an intimate portrait of an entire generation of American mothers whose children were diagnosed with autism. Labeled 'refrigerator mothers' in the 1950s and 1960s by the medical establishment for their supposedly frigid and detached mothering, these women have emerged with strong, resilient voices to share the details of their personal journeys.

You've never seen basketball like this. Kiss My Wheels follows the Zia Hot Shots, a nationally ranked junior wheelchair basketball team, through a season of training and tournament competition. This spunky, diverse, co-ed group of adolescent athletes bring a special meaning to the idea of teamwork. "This is the one place they go where they have wings," says their coach. "Whether it's a flat tire or a leaking catheter, whatever it is, we can deal with it." And we do see them deal with some thorny and difficult issues, from gender conflicts to injury, illness and thoughts of death.

It's great to see such movies who seem to know how to deal with such sensitive issues. Others just don't seem to care if they have been going overboard with the portrayal of such characters. By the way guys, some of the movies you've listed, I haven't seen yet. But I'll definitely watch some of it (if not all).

My Flesh and Blood is a 2003 documentary film by Jonathan Karsh chronicling a year in the life of the Tom family. The Tom family is notable as the mother, Susan, adopted eleven children, most of whom had serious disabilities or diseases. The film itself is notable for handling the sensitive subject matter in an unsentimental way that is more uplifting than one might expect. It was nominated for and won several awards, including the Audience Award and the Director's Award at the Sundance Film Festival.

Rang-e Khoda (literal translation from Persian: The Color of God), or, as it was released in English-speaking countries, The Color of Paradise, is a 1999 Iranian film directed by Majid Majidi.

The story revolves around a blind boy named Mohammed who is released from his special school in Tehran for summer vacation. His father, shamed and burdened by Mohammed's blindness, arrives late to pick him up and then tries to convince the headmaster to keep Mohammed over the summer. The headmaster refuses, so Mohammed's father eventually takes him home.

See No Evil, Hear No Evil

See No Evil, Hear No Evil is a 1989 American comedy film directed by Arthur Hiller and starring Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder.

A blind man named Wally Karue (Pryor) and a deaf man named Dave Lyons (Wilder) meet when Wally applies for a job in Dave's New York City concession shop. After a brief period of confusion and antagonism, Wally and Dave become friends. Dave reads lips and guides Wally when they travel, and Wally tells Dave about invisible sounds and what people say behind his back. At a local bar, Wally defeats a belligerent man in a fistfight with assistance from Dave, who uses clock-face directions to tell Wally where his opponent is. Dave hires Wally.

Liebe Perla: a complex friendship and lost disability history captured on film
By Barbara Duncan ( bjdnycla@aol.com)

At the end of this unique documentary, there is often silence in the room as the audience works to take in the myriad of complexities, ambiguities, moral dilemmas and unanswered questions. Then the opinions, questions and often, arguments, begin. "Liebe Perla" (Dear Perla) is surely one of the most provocative, profound and disturbing disability-themed films ever produced.

The film documents the deepening international friendship between two women of short stature: Hannelore, a young German disability advocate who is researching the treatment of little people during the Holocaust, and Perla, an 80 year old concentration camp survivor and former member of a Jewish family musical troup of dwarves from Transylvania. She and her family survived Auschwitz only because the "Angel of Death," Joseph Mengele decided to keep them alive for his "experiments."

Ennis' Gift: A Film About Learning Differences
.Most of us know the story of Bill Cosby’s son Ennis’ death, but many may not know that Ennis was dyslexic. Indeed, Ennis struggled through school until he gained an understanding of the way his mind processed information and learned to accommodate it. At the time of his death, Ennis was a teacher, helping kids cope with learning differences like his own. But Ennis Cosby was hardly the only celebrity with learning differences. Others include well-known actors: Danny Glover, Henry Winkler, Lindsay Wagner, and James Earl Jones. You can also include artist Robert Rauschenberg, Wall Street guru Charles Schwab, and Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner.

For his new documentary, "Ennis' Gift: A Film About Learning Differences," Joshua Seftel has interviewed the celebrities above, plus a handful of children with learning differences, all of whom recount a similar tale of being frustrated in school, of being treated as if they were stupid, and, in the case of the grown-ups (who grew up before learning differences were approached as they are now), of eventually turning to other pursuits to prove themselves.

Alison's Baby

Alison Lapper was born without arms and with short deformed legs. She has a strong way of dealing with all her physical disadvantages - and her resolve to make the most of life is inspiring. Her career as an artist - mouth-painter, photographer and sculptress - is driven by her determination to change peoples attitudes and open their eyes to a different kind of beauty.

When Alison finds out that she has become pregnant, she is faced with a barrage of thorny questions: Will the baby be normal or have physical abnormalities like its mother? How far into pregnancy will her small body be able to cope with the expanding foetus? And last but not least: How does a single woman with no arms and truncated body look after a helpless baby?

Ennis' Gift, introduced by Ed Bradley of 60 Minutes, is inspired by the legacy of Ennis William Cosby, a young man who became a passionate educator dedicated to helping all children find their gifts and learn. Ennis knew how it felt to have difficulties learning to read and write. He understood the hurt, frustration and confusion that come from being misunderstood by teachers and not "fitting in" with peers.

It was his dream to help children find the self-esteem, support and learning techniques that would open the doors of accomplishment and joy to them. His life was a gift to us; our understanding of learning differences is our gift to his memory, and to all those who struggle to learn.

Basically, "Nationale 7" was a TV film which was theatrically given new life several months after its first broadcasting on the French German channel Arte. A necessary resurrection to appreciate a canonical film on the prickly subject of people with motor disability.

Jean-Pierre Sinapi walks away with the honors and with grit of a story which could have at any time fallen in unhealthy voyeurism or crass slapstick comedy. His film never borders on these two formidable traps and conveys a communicative feel good vibe without neglecting a lucid look when necessary. Thus, the sequences when Julie and René go through a series of administrative, juridical procedures to enable Renée to have sex with the prostitute, the reactions of the manager and some administrative members ring thoroughly true. To explore this close-knit community of handicapped people with their desires and expectations, respect and warmth are his two best assets. These two positive points could also be applied to the prostitute and I personally dig the moment when she begins a conversation with Rabah (Saïd Thagmaoui) about his icon "Johnny" Hallyday whom she has seen twice in her lifetime in 1998 at the French Stadium.

She receives encouragement from a young boy who has his entire arm amputated at the same time in the same hospital. He learns to play, on her team with one arm. In the end, she takes on a girl for the outfield. A field is dedicated to her in Baltimore for the hundreds of children she coached

Kami ,Takalani Sesame ("be happy Sesame" in Venda), which is the South African version of the children's television program Sesame Street.

Dr. Jill Biden meeting with Kami.In 2002, Sesame Workshop announced that an HIV-positive character would be introduced to Takalani Sesame, the U.S. Agency for International Development-funded South African version of the show. This idea was considered crucial for an area where AIDS is an epidemic. The HIV+ character's name, Kami, is derived from Kamogelo, which means acceptance or welcome in Setswana. Kami is a furry yellow five-year-old HIV-positive girl muppet orphaned by AIDS who always has the sniffles. Her backstory is that she contracted the disease as the result of a transfusion of tainted blood received as an infant; her mother also died of HIV/AIDS. Kami illustrates to Takalani's viewers how to deal with loss and sad feelings in a way that three- to seven-year-olds can understand.
