Media according to me is what moves the society therefore is important that it portrays disability right and bring out issues effecting lives of our disabled population such as accessibility, employment, education ........
In my 14 years of close association with disability, I definatly have seem the media coverage on disability improve. I can recall earlier when, well rehabilitated persons with disabilty were portrayed as super hero's but now you can see a pleasant improvement in terms of how the topic is actually handled. Thank God! they are now considered as regular persons leading a regular life. Also there is a lot of good issue related coverage too. One can regularly see articles about eduaction and employment and how people with disabilities are inspite of performing well still being deined. Such articles definatly wake up the society.
Well my hope is that the media will also start covering issues pertaining to disabled persons and their social life. Where things like inaccessibility to a simple place like a cinema, restuarant etc are covered. After all people with disabilities and their family and friends are waiting for a day when they can enjoy memorable outings in terms of the good time they had instead of the number of steps they had to negotiate and the problems they had in trying to make that memorable evening
I do look forward to a discussion of what you feel about the importance of media
God Bless!

hello,
I feel that media is doing an excellent job of bringing forth the issue of disability and the actual problems faced by the disabled. Also, it is a very effective and important medium to educate and sensitise the general public towards this cause. Various articles in the newspapers really serve as an eye-opener. Films like Iqbal and black have definitely made their mark and have been really appreciated all over. These days, even the television is coming foreward in this direction with a few soaps based such storylines. Well, we can be happy but not complacent because we have a long way to go and so much more needs to be done to realise the dream of an 'equal' society.

Hi All,
While the importance of media (print & television) cannot be negated, with changing times and the shift in the reach and usability of internet media, it is important that the issue of disability and access are given enough visibility here too. Print and Television are broadcasting medias, but internet acts as an exchange media, therefore empowering people to react or debate on the information presented. This power to react and register your reaction for others to view is missing from both print and television media.
What do you guys think ??

Did you guys know that according to a study conducted by the Centre for Development Learning, Bangalore in 2000, it was discovered that "No serious discussions on issues pertaining to people with disabilities appeared" in the newspapers surveyed, including The Times of India, The Hindustan Times and Deccan Herald. The researchers found no news relating to people with disabilities on the front page; the few event-based reports in which they were mentioned appeared on pages four to 12.
Another cause of concern is the fact that when the media do go beyond routine coverage of events, they tend to focus on individuals with disability and to portray them as either heroes or victims. There is little attempt to present and analyse the situation of people with disabilities as citizens who together constitute an integral part of society, contribute to it and have a legitimate claim on its resources. The issue is also seen primarily in terms of welfare and charity, not as a question of human rights and dignity.
What is your take on this ??

Media has become very important these days as it gives chance to common man to raise its issues like in some famous cases where justice was denied initially and later after involvement of media the common man was winner.
