How to Improve Accessibility ?

How to Improve Accessibility?

Several factors influence accessibility. The most common barriers faced by disabled people are physical inaccessibility of the premises, staff’s lack of understanding of the needs of disabled clients or colleagues, inappropriate staff attitude, and/ or non-disabled friendly organizational policies and procedures. It is therefore essential to involve a professional ‘Access Consultant’ if a fully inclusive environment is to be achieved. An Access Consultant will be able to consider all barriers, besides physical/ structural barriers, that can limit or promote the accessibility and recommend additional solutions such as provision of assistive devices, staff training, and suggesting appropriate changes in policies, practices and procedures.

The primary steps involved in improving accessibility are:-

  1. Audits – Audits are important to benchmark the level of existing accessibility and to provide a baseline on which further improvements may be recommended. It will be essential to avail services of an Access Consultant who will undertake the following:-

    1. Access Audit

    2. Policy Audit

    3. Workplace Assessment

  1. Staff Training – It is important to ensure that staff is trained in the following areas:-

    1. Disability Awareness Training

    2. Communication Etiquette

    3. Assisting Disabled Clients and Colleagues

  2. Planning – Planning in the following areas is essential to incorporate features to ensure that providing an inclusive environment becomes an integral company process and is a permanent part of the company’s operation and ethos.

    1. Access Implementation Strategy Planning

    2. Working toward becoming an ‘Equal Opportunities Employer’
